LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 5, 2025) — The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center is showcasing work of student and faculty researchers through its Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress (SWAP) series.
Many of the presenters are recipients of the 2024 James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia and the UK Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Award.
The series will also highlight other scholars and students sharing their research. The presenters range from students at UK to international researchers.
The presentations will be noon-1:30 p.m. at the Appalachian Center at 624 Maxwelton Court and on Zoom. Lunch will be provided.
The dates and presenters/topics for the Spring 2025 SWAP series are:
Maria Bareli, Liken Knowledge, Commons Governance Fellow, Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network; and Kathryn Newfront, associate professor in the UK Department of History, will present “A2A: Making Aegean Appalachian Connections, Building Bridges of Knowledge Exchange and Visions Towards Just Futures.”
Michelle Roberts, 2024 James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia, will present “From Survival to Living Well: A Socioecological Approach to Understand Acquired Disability and Advance Health Equity in Rural Appalachia.”
Courtney Martin, 2024 Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Award, will present “The Role of Social Support in Diabetes Self Care Behaviors Among Residents of Appalachia with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.”
Grace Seymour, 2024 James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research on Appalachia, will present “Trauma, Alcohol Use, and Sleep Health in Appalachian Kentucky.”
Chandana Mathur, associate professor of anthropology, Maynooth University, will present “Reflections on Struggles Over Water in India.”
Madoline Varias, 2024 UK Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Award, will present “Avian Response to Legacy Coal Mine Reforestation in the Cumberland Plateau, Kentucky.”
Jimmy Robinson, 2024 UK Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Award, will present “In the Greenhouse: A Multispecies Analysis of Scale, Rationality, and Technology in Agriculture.”
