Note:
This course explores the art and architecture of the Islamic word from the Dome of the Rock to contemporary repositories of Islamic art and culture, such as the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. We will consider secular and religious architecture, as well as examples of the luxury arts, including manuscripts, calligraphy, metalworking, ceramics, and textiles. From these examples we will identify and define characteristics of Islamic Art. Working from Oleg Grabar's premise that Islamic art "formed" by adopting, adapting, and transforming visual forms from other cultures and religions, special emphasis will be placed upon the cross-cultural nature of works of Islamic art and architecture from around the world.
