Note:
The seminar will study characteristic examples of one of the most important genres of Roman art with the following purposes: 1. to establish a common understanding of stylistic and iconographic developments in Roman art between the Late Republic and Constantine; 2. to understand these works in the context of their making and use; 3. to understand, practice and criticize ways modern scholars have learned to analyze and categorize Roman portraits; 4. to exercise skills in art historical research, interpretation and communication, applying them to your own projects.
