Intro To Professions In Writing

This course introduces students to rhetorical studies, advanced composition, and research in rhetoric and composition. The course aims to begin preparation for careers in the teaching of writing in secondary schools, two- and four-year colleges, Teaching English?as a Second Language (TESOL), as well as in publishing and freelance writing. Prereq: Fulfillment of the University Writing Requirement.

Phonetics

This course examines the phonetics of natural language including both the articulation and acoustics of speech sounds and suprasegmental units. Discussion includes extensive reference to languages other than English.

Major Russian Writers

The study of Tolstoy his art and life. All readings lectures and discussions are in English. Students taking the course for Russian major credit are expected to do outside work in Russian. May be repeated under different subtitles to a maximum of six credits.

Political Science as a Path to Law School: Rachel Hensley

Rachel Hensley didn’t always know she wanted to study political science, but she found that the University of Kentucky’s College of Arts and Sciences had much to offer her both as a student finding her way, and as a Spanish language major. The broad variety of classes offered at UK and through the A&S college allowed Hensley the breathing room to work her way toward where she wanted to be.

Global Mountain Regions Conference: Ann Kingsolver and Sasikumar Balasundaram

This coming October 25th through 27th, the University of Kentucky’s Appalachian Center and Appalachian Studies Program is set to kick-off their ambitious Global Mountain Regions Conference. The three day event is a transnational exploration and conversation of the shared economic, social, and historical challenges that mountain regions face within both national and global contexts.



JT Waldman presents "My Pekar Years: Creating Comix and Exploring Judaism with 'Our Man'"

2012 Hymson Lecture, part of the UK Speaker Series in Graphic Narrative and Visual Design

Harvey Pekar’s self-published series American Splendor proved that comics could be more than just super-heroes. Pekar’s legacy pervades much of contemporary independent comix. This presentation charts the final work of Pekar that focused on his Jewish identity before his death in 2010. Learn what it was like to work with the famous curmudgeon and watch a rare video clip of the Bard of the Rust Belt. JT Waldman is the Illustrator/Author of Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me and Megillat Esther.
