The two pieces, “Caochangdi” (2009) and “Markets and Malls” (2010-2011), on exhibit in the Lexington Art League’s downtown gallery, consist of sequential photographs shown as continuously looping slide shows and stop action animations. Caochangdi is an urban village located in Beijing, which is home to a number of upscale contemporary galleries and artist’s studios. Artists and galleries began moving there in the late 1990s following the artist Ai Weiwei, who was one of the first to set up his studio. The mix of traditional village life and contemporary art world provides a rich and endlessly fascinating micro-world in the environs of Beijing. “Markets and Malls” represents the contrast between the new upscale shopping malls and their traditional counterparts in Hong Kong.

I just read this article, entitled, "Missouri Outlaws Student-Teacher Facebook Friendship." Again, it seems like these discussions about social media effects and applications seem to gravitate towards me. But, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts. As new technologies develop, new laws sprout up governing the use of such technologies. Don't believe me? Is sexting inappropriate? Would making it illegal be an infringement of privacy? What about spam? Shouldn't it be protected under the 1st ammendment? What if the one doing the spamming resides outside the United States? I had the pleasure of exploring these topics a few semesters ago in my Media Law & Regulation class. Neat stuff, right?
Corrine Price, an undergraduate senior, worked as an intern at the Saartijie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, a domestic violence shelter in Cape Town, South Africa. The trip was sponsored by the University of Kentucky and was in conjunction with the Kentucky and South Africa Initiative: "Different Lands, Common Ground."
